On 17 June 2025, Greece and France formalized a cooperation agreement aimed at improving forest management and enhancing wildfire prevention efforts. The agreement, signed in Luxembourg by Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, and France’s Minister of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, Sea and Fisheries, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, focuses on exchanging best practices, expertise, and innovative tools for sustainable forestry.
Key areas of collaboration include the introduction of know-how and innovation in forest management, with a focus on good practices in the use of satellite data for forest protection and methods for harvesting and utilising biomass from nearby agricultural areas. The agreement reflects the shared commitment of both countries to combine their expertise and address the similarities of their forest ecosystems, aiming to advance knowledge transfer, innovative forest management, and sustainable wood product utilisation.
These priorities align with broader European efforts to harness technology for environmental protection, as seen in projects like STELLA, which is developing an advanced digital surveillance system for early pest detection, plant health monitoring, and targeted phytosanitary measures. By combining IoT sensors, AI-driven forecasting models, drones, satellites, and mobile applications, STELLA supports eco-friendly crop protection, smarter forest management, and evidence-based policy recommendations, contributing to the EU’s goals of reducing pesticide use, managing pest outbreaks, and promoting digitalisation in agriculture and forestry.
