Ralstonia solanacearum (Bacterium)
Pest Challenges
Once inside a plant, R. solanacearum colonises the vascular system, causing wilting, yellowing, and eventual death of the plant. Besides the direct damage caused by the pathogen, the entire field must be destroyed according to the Regional law DPG/2021/9524. Finally, control of R. solanacearum is difficult, as the bacterium can persist in soil and plant debris for many years
Region Challenges
Italy is the third biggest producer of tomato for processing worldwide (5,166 million tonnes in 2020), with the Emilia-Romagna region being responsible for about half of it.
UCP plan
For the Italian UCP in Emilia-Romagna region (processing tomato), a minimum of three processing tomato farms will be selected for piloting and testing STELLA solutions. Due to the extent of the investigated area, only sub-regions with significant production of processing tomato will be picked upon consultation from local authorities and farmers, to enable representative, frequent and feasible deployment of STELLA technologies.
